Concert of Hope, Reflection, & Joy

Friday, March 13, 2020 – Online – 7 p.m.

The Elkhart County Symphony is staging a first – and sharing the stage with a Grammy Award-winning ensemble, too!

The symphony will perform its first-ever online concert, titled “Concert of Hope, Reflection, & Joy,” on March 13 at 7 p.m. The group will be joined by Third Coast Percussion, a quartet of classically-trained percussionists. Third Coast Percussion will perform Agusta Read Thomas’s “Selene” with the symphony’s string quartet.

During this free online event, there will be an area for chatting and asking questions, live segments during the intermission when Music Director Soo Han will discuss the performance and interview our special guests, and a “green room” experience with the director after the concert. “Concert of Hope, Reflection, & Joy” will mark Soo Han’s first time conducting the Elkhart County Symphony.

A direct connection with the audience is at the core of all of Third Coast Percussion’s work, whether the musicians are speaking from the stage about a new piece of music, inviting the audience to play along in a concert or educational performance, or inviting their fans around the world to create new music using one of their free mobile apps.

Third Coast Percussion has put its stamp on iconic percussion works by John Cage and Steve Reich, and the group has also created first recordings of commissioned works by Philip Glass, Augusta Read Thomas, Devonté Hynes, and more, in addition to recordings of the ensemble’s own compositions. In 2017 the ensemble won the Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble performance for its recording of Steve Reich’s works for percussion.

Last year, Third Coast received its second Grammy nomination in the same category for “Perpetulum,” featuring works by Gavin Bryars, Philip Glass, and ensemble members.

“The Elkhart County Symphony has created a special live performance to share with you,” said John R. Hill, co-executive director of the Elkhart County Symphony.  “Thanks to advanced technology, you can view this performance in the comfort of your home, safely and with the joy we want to bring to you!”

Symphony Garden Tour

Sunday, September 13, 2020 – Wellfield Botanic Gardens – 4 p.m.

We are back for a special performance while we get ready to announce our 2021 season! Along with our partners at the Wellfield Botanic Gardens, the symphony is excited to announce a special outdoor performance on Sunday, September 13, at 4 p.m. The event is called “Symphony Garden Tour,” and it’s actually several concerts in one! The Garden Tour will be a set of performances by small ensembles scattered throughout the Wellfield Botanic Gardens.

The audience is invited to tour the Gardens and enjoy both the beauty of nature and the beauty of live music performance. Seven music ensembles will perform over the course of two hours in three separate areas along the garden pathway. The small groups will include Zephyr Woodwind Quintet, Generations Jazz Trio, and brass and string ensembles.

The symphony’s planning includes consideration of pandemic health safety for musicians, staff, and our audience. Face masks are required in Wellfield buildings and restrooms, as well as outdoors when social distancing is difficult.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase inside the Gardens, and the restroom building will be open. Performance attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs or a blanket.
